Fitness Pavilion
Fulham, London
A pre-fabricated garden studio - purpose made for exercise and weight-lifting - positioned to the rear of a Grade-II listed Georgian villa.
We were approached to design a robust and highly functional space for a fitness-loving client. They also required a building that had the potential to be pre-fabricated off-site, ready for a fast-paced delivery and construction on-site. The client was conscious of the usual issues of neighbourly disturbance that a typical construction project on a heavily-constrained London site can cause, so it was crucial that the design minimised noisy and disruptive site trades. The new space was to be used for weight training and, in a similar vein, the client wanted to ensure that the new building was highly insulated and noise-proof as to not disturb neighbours when in use.
Our concept suggests a combination of pre-fabrication techniques: cross-laminated timber, roof cassettes and repeating pre-formed glulam timber frame sections. By repeating a number of standard forms, we were able to ensure that all components of the building could be transported easily by road and craned into place.
The scheme has now been submitted for planning approval and listed building consent.
